What is Sleepwalking?

Sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism, is a sleep disorder where individuals engage in activities typically performed during wakefulness while they are still asleep. These activities can range from simple actions like sitting up in bed and walking around the house to more complex behaviors such as leaving the house, driving, or even engaging in conversations.

Sleepwalking usually occurs during the deep stages of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, typically in the first third of the night. It is more common in children but can persist into adulthood. Episodes can last from a few seconds to half an hour or longer, and individuals often have little to no memory of the event when they wake up.

Factors that may contribute to sleepwalking include sleep deprivation, stress, fever, certain medications, and underlying conditions like sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome. Although sleepwalking itself is generally not harmful, the activities performed during an episode can pose safety risks to the sleepwalker and others.

Parasomnias

At Pasha Snoring & Sinus Center, we understand the disruptive impact parasomnias can have on your life. Parasomnias encompass a range of sleep disorders that involve abnormal behaviors, emotions, perceptions, or dreams occurring while falling asleep, during sleep, or upon waking. These include sleep terrors, where individuals experience sudden arousal from deep sleep with intense fear and agitation, and confusional arousals, where a person appears awake but is confused and disoriented.

We also address REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), which involves acting out vivid dreams often violently, and sleep talking, where individuals speak without awareness during sleep. Sleep paralysis, another common parasomnia, involves the temporary inability to move or speak, often with hallucinations and a sense of pressure on the chest. Nightmares, which cause vivid and disturbing dreams leading to waking in fear, and sleep eating disorder, where individuals eat during partial arousals from sleep without memory of the event, are also conditions we treat.

At Pasha Snoring & Sinus Center, our team is dedicated to providing thorough diagnosis and personalized treatment plans to manage and alleviate these conditions. Our goal is to help you achieve restful, uninterrupted sleep and improve your overall quality of life.
