Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that affects breathing during sleep, often leading to poor rest and long-term health complications. While non-surgical treatments like positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy or oral appliances are effective for many patients, some individuals require surgical intervention to achieve lasting relief.

At Pasha Snoring & Sinus Center in Houston, we offer a range of advanced surgical procedures tailored to treat obstructive sleep apnea and improve breathing for a better night’s rest.

When is Sleep Apnea Surgery Necessary?

Snoring occurs when airflow is partially obstructed during sleep, causing vibrations in the throat. Common causes include:

Have not found success with CPAP therapy or other non-surgical treatments

Suffer from anatomical obstructions in the upper airway

Experience moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea that affects their quality of life

Are looking for a long-term solution to snoring and sleep apnea

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea through a sleep study and are considering surgical options, our team will assess your medical history, severity of symptoms, and treatment goals to determine the best course of action.

Surgical Procedures for Sleep Apnea

At Pasha Snoring & Sinus Center, we offer a variety of surgical solutions to address different anatomical causes of sleep apnea. Some of the most common procedures include:

Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation (Inspire Therapy)

This innovative procedure involves implanting a small device that stimulates the hypoglossal nerve, which controls tongue movement. By activating the tongue base during sleep, this procedure helps keep the airway open without the need for a CPAP machine.

Palatal Reconstruction and Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)

Palatal Reconstruction is a technique in which the back of the throat is reconstructed to allow for more space. This usually requires the removal of tonsils and excess tissue from the soft palate and throat to widen the airway and reduce obstructions that cause snoring and apnea episodes.

Genioglossus Advancement (GA)

GA repositions the tongue muscle attachment to prevent it from collapsing backward during sleep. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with other sleep apnea surgeries to enhance airway stability.

Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA)

MMA surgery repositions the upper and lower jaw to enlarge the airway, making it one of the most effective surgical treatments for severe sleep apnea. It is typically recommended for patients with significant anatomical obstructions.

Tongue Base Reduction

For patients with an enlarged tongue base contributing to sleep apnea, a tongue base reduction procedure can help create more space in the airway. This may be done using radiofrequency ablation or surgical removal techniques.

Nasal Surgery

For individuals whose nasal obstructions contribute to sleep apnea, procedures such as septoplasty (to straighten the nasal septum) or turbinate reduction can improve airflow and enhance the effectiveness of other sleep apnea treatments.
